The passion ¡®to make the world a better place to live¡¯ made me a public servant establishing energy policies, though my original dream in university was to become a journalist. Professor Kim, xx, my academic advisor in xxxxxx university, advised me that working experience in corporations would be asset for life and would clarify the direction for further studies, when I was agonizing over whether to advance into graduate school or seek employment in 1999. Following his advice, I joined xxxxx taking charge of promotion. In 2003, I transferred to the government sector and have worked as an administrative officer establishing policies on xxxx at the Ministry of xxxxxxxxx. Almost 9 years after working, I sincerely need to foster my insights through graduate school. I have completed preparation to attend the MIA course of SIPA with the financial support of my employer, xxxxx, and it will make me a specialist to lead green growth, the future vision of Korean government.

While majoring in sociology, I was able to research social phenomenon including labor movement/technology revolution in depth through academic approaches that combined politics, economics, and history. Also, by taking social statistics and social survey research, I fostered analytical ability to turn fragmented data into significant case, and subjects such as comparative sociology provided me with opportunity to examine the progress and different aspects of particular society from diverse range of viewpoints. As such, I began my professional career at the xxxxx, which is a highly advanced IT corporation. At the time, the experience of producing advertisement for ¡®Multinet¡¯ or ¡®Thinkpad¡¯ series and establishing promotion strategy by holding conference call once a week with marketing teams in Japan and China, enabled me to learn the trend in commercialization of technology and assisted me to foster international senses.

xxxx, I participated in the Cross Culture Awareness Program of UNESCO as an assistant teacher. It was a fulfilling experience of visiting high schools in Seoul along with foreigners who were participating as one-day teachers, and I helped them illustrate customs of various countries using PC or VTR. However, holding culture classes in schools located in poverty stricken neighborhoods in hillside slums was quite difficult due to lack of technological infrastructure such as high speed internet connection. As watching children with limited opportunities for education, I sincerely experienced the dark sides of economic growth. Through such social classes alienated from technological benefits, I came to realize that welfare is as important as economic growth, and eventually decided to change my occupation from one dealing with ¡®technology to generate revenues¡¯ to public servant with focus on ¡®technique of pondering over public interest¡¯ t the Ministry of xxxxxxxx

Similarity between these 2 companies was that both were Korean insurance companies that recently entered the Chinese market with enormous potentials. With low market share and high entry barrier into the insurance market, it was difficult for both companies to increase their market share in China with limited access into the market. I was mainly involved in surveying the trends in the property insurance market in China and submit reports on the survey. Through these activities, I was able to understand the property insurance market in China. In addition, I learned through these internships that actuary can develop products that are wanted by and is useful to consumers as well as satisfy the interests of the company when actuary is familiar with wide range of areas and society rather than simply being proficient in probability statistics and computer programming. . I wanted to research products and persuasion for many contradictory people who have positive way of thinking while at the same time are highly suspiciously, not only in China but also in many other countries.

One of the most important reason for my wanting to become an actuary is because actuary prepares the present through the past data and future forecast. Accordingly, I chose to major in risk management and insurance, and took courses such as integral and differential calculus, statistics, economics, finance and risk management, which are the requisites to learn actuarial science.

In particular, I came to realize that the occupation of actuary is not limited to programming by using probability statistics in an office but, rather, need to communicate with constituent members of the society in order to find out the risk that consumers are exposed to and what kind of products need to be created in order to hedge the risk that consumers are not aware of. As I felt that my ability to so just that was inadequate, I chose to enlist into the compulsory military service first rather than enrolling into a graduate school. An actuary at insurance company plays the role of a leader who guides the brains of the company by coordinating goals amongst the insurance underwriting, claims, sales and finance departments. That is, an actuary must establish a goal and lead the members of the organization towards accomplishment of such goal by understanding the thoughts of the members. While serving computational duties in the army at the fire direction center, and playing the role of leading members of organization and computing to enable them to perform firing of trench mortar by leading observations, geodetic survey, communications and artillery squadron, I personally learned the means of leading organization even though the contents of the tasks were different. As I have learned the technique of operating organization and working by leading organization through knowledge acquired at the university and experiences in the military service, I am confidently applying for master¡¯s degree course in actuary science at the Waterloo University I would like to learn about actuary science in earnest by taking the master¡¯s degree course at the XXXX and I am particularly interest in the area of pension.

Along with the increase in the average lifespan of human beings, the issue of how to design personal finance for one¡¯s retirement is directly related to the issue of how stably one can live latter half of one¡¯s life. In particular, Korea is one of many countries with poor program for the lives of people in their old age, and there is trend of lowering of retirement age and, on the contrary, continuous increase in average age of death. In addition, as the variability in global finance market is increasing, pension is essential in achieving stabilized cash flow.

Sculptures have power.

The term ¡°Washington¡± that contains sacrosanct notion of a place allowed for building up of a new world by the forefathers of USA and through which the apotheosis of the 1st President of USA can be felt has enormous significance to me.

Although my decision to pursue my further studies here stems partly from the fact that it is in geographical proximity of Virginia where I completed my high school, it was induced mainly by the notion associated with the term ¡°Washington.¡±

<Apotheosis of Washington>, fresco mural (1865, Constatino Brumidi) that covers the rotunda of Capitol building of USA that I have encountered has provided me with the motivation. <Apotheosis of Washington> depicts the image of ascending of Washington above the clouds with the help of goddesses of freedom and victory. This is understood to express the belief that the forefathers of USA have been endowed with omnipotent wisdom.

In addition, although the rotunda of the Capitol building of USA housed statue of Washington (by Horatio Greenough, 1840), this statue induced fierce criticism from people. This statue of Washington created after the image of Zeus is currently held at the Smithsonian American History Museum due to the reason that naked Washington even imparts comical impression.

Although the fresco mural was intriguing to me, the bronze statue of Washington in Shooter Hill (by the Masonic Fraternity) in George Washington Masonic Memorial that I saw later became the 17ft of bronzed reason for deciding to study sculpture in the case of VA.

During the undergraduate course, I was able to study drawing, which is a fundamental attainment, and ability to recompose the world through my major in video arts and minor in fashion design.

Museum refers to facility that makes contribution towards exhibition of archeological artifacts in the areas of history, arts, folklore, industry and science, and works of art and other academic materials on humanities and nature by collecting, storing and displaying them under educational considerations to the general public and pursues survey and research on such materials and data.

In the case of Korean Folk Village (opened in 1974) that I visited during my childhood had structures including government offices, private residences of ordinary social classes as well as noble classes of the past with different architecture for each regions of Korea scattered throughout the complex, and reproduced the lifestyle of our ancestors in their midst along with exhibition of various daily life tools, agricultural tools and craftworks. In addition, it demonstrated wide range of folk games and folk crafts, making the place highly memorable. However, it is simply a venue that reproduced the daily lifestyle of our ancestors, not a museum.

As such, museum is an academic institution that collects objects with academic value or works of art that contains history of art. Unless one lacks in understanding of the culture and history of the era in which such artifacts were created, it is not uncommon that one overlooks the intent contained in the works of art and of the creator without fully understanding them.

For example, drawing of landscape in the orients is greatly influenced by Taoism. Accordingly, people placed more emphasis on the religious significance than on the rules of the nature (as illustrated by blossoming of cherry blossom in the winter). Religious intents are also well revealed in the painting in the west as well. Symbols appearing in drawings signify prescribed promises.

In January this year, I had lunch with one of my friends working for home appliance division at XXX. After the lunch, he suggested that I should work in his division. He was involved in developing robot cleaners, and he told me that I am the right person to work in his division because my extensive experience in embedded system and image processing learned during developing TVs and Set-top boxes will greatly help in developing such robots. I had thought robots could be developed by engineers majored in mechanical engineering and I¡¯m not related to developing robots, but I realized that my experience is deeply related to robots, and I can challenge to robotics. Suddenly, memories of my childhood came flooding back.

I had always been impressed with sci-fi novels and movies, and I dreamt of developing futuristic devices such as rockets and robots since my early childhood. As a child, I was enormously fascinated by sci-fi novels and movies, and dreamt of inventing rockets and robots one day. Especially, I was excited to watching ¡®A six million dollar man¡¯ in which Steve Austin¡¯s body was reassembled with mechanical organs. While dreaming, I noticed that these devices would be very sophisticated, requiring complicated programs. Moreover, the more I explored this simple childhood curiosity, the more I realized that these programs require profound understanding of sophisticated and complicated technologies. Watching sci-fi movies and reading sci-fi novels further intensified my desire to one day create technological devices depicted. These movies and novels gave me hope that they could be realized. Therefore, wanting to explore this possibility and in order to be able to write a program of my own one day, I decided to major in engineering at a university.

As a graduate student at the XXXX University, I undertook a number of projects and investigations including Design for Autopilot Using Adaptive Control for the Agency for Defense Development. The main purpose of the project was to track the position of an airplane using sequential pictures taken from airplanes and I was primarily responsible for implementation of these functions using the commercial evaluation DSP board and guaranteeing real-time processing. During this process, my advisor, Professor Rae-Hong Park, guided me on means of deriving optimal solutions to many problems, which nurtured a set of skills that I used in professional capacity following graduation.

I began my career at XXXXX Inc., a company dedicated to the development of telecommunications equipments. Here, I collaborated with expert engineers with profound knowledge of embedded system. Having exposed myself to different tasks and received continued feedbacks, I was eventually able to fully grasp the concept of embedded systems from its bootstrap to user interface application.

In this essay I am going to concentrate mostly on the incentives that stimulate me to pursue further studying, and reflect the motives for my choice of XXXX University as well as state my future career objectives.

When introduced to economics in undergraduate school I realized that it interestingly qualified as a subject of both arts and science. It was an area defined by precise rules, principles and axioms and yet there was tremendous scope for self-expression in the form of interpretation and analysis. This facet of economics intrigued me very much and I decided to pursue further studies in economics.

During my undergraduate program I armed myself as best as I could with various tools that are useful for study in economics: the courses of economics, public administration and mathematics. Having participated in The Monetary Policy Competition, run by the Bank of Korea, in XXXX, drove me to be a would-be economist.

Urban economics is an area I would really like to explore. Housing problem has been one of the most heated social issues in my country, South Korea. Compared to its counterparts in other countries, the metropolitan area such as Seoul in Korea has experienced a great degree of urbanization for fast decades, which have been considered culprit of the housing problem. Unfortunately, the government has always failed to make an effective policy that stabilizes house prices whenever the prices are rocketing. Moreover, the importance of study in urban economics can be verified by the Subprime Mortgage Crisis.

The relation between property tax capitalization and house price holds its own attraction. It will interest me to analyze the impact of property tax on house price. Of course, it is theoretically true that increase in the present value of property tax leads to decrease in the price of a house; some policy-makers may thus assert that property tax can be utilized as an available policy to control the price of house. It seems, however, to rely on a partial equilibrium framework: for instance, the model focuses on one house or region.
